Factors For Selecting Rubber or Metal Expansion Joints

When helping customers to select pipe rubber or metal expansion joints, engineers often follow the industry’s generally accepted criteria, known as ‘STAMPED‘, as a way of looking at the full range of pipe expansion joint requirements. The engineer gathers information based on this set of factors to provide the customer with a better expansion joint solution and equipment.

Factors For Selecting Rubber or Metal Expansion Joints

Then what is ‘STAMPED’? The following is the definition of the components of the acronym:

  • S (Size ) :
What is the diameter of the pipe and the thickness of the pipe under consideration?

  • T (Temperature):
    What is the process temperature?
    Is the temperature variable?
What is the rate of change of temperature?
Will the process temperature remain below the rated temperature of the expansion joint material in all process situations?

  • A (Application):
What are the details of the application?
What type of equipment is connected?
What are the characteristics of the process media?
Is it acidic, alkaline or neutral?
Is the connection outdoors or indoors?

  • M (Movement) :
What type of movement will the expansion joint undergo? Compression and expansion, vibration, lateral movements, complex movements?
And what is the magnitude of this movement?
What forces will the movement exert on the adjacent equipment?
What are the magnitudes of these forces?
Are the pipes anchored and do they require control rods?

  • P (Pressure) :
What is the pressure in the pipe?
    Is there any variation?

  • E (End fittings) :
    How are the pipes capped?

  • D (Delivery) :
    How are the joints fitted?

Using the STAMPED standard can quickly assist our customers with the choice of using metal or rubber expansion joints. However, there are still many options and different designs in each category, so it is important to ask your engineer in detail before purchasing a expansion joint.
